E60 is totally different from Camry which does not consume much current in standby mode. In case of E60, there's a lot of electronic device and memory needs to be kept alive, so it's not a surprise to hear the car go dead after a couple of weeks.
True about the Camry. But, I still contest that unlike the old days, most systems are now relay disconnected to minimize residual drain during shutdown. I have seen my car last 2 weeks if traveling and I would assume 2-3 should not be a problem. How long do cars sit on the lot without being started?

I had one time while parked at the airport that the car did not shutdown and the battery was almost dead. There was also issues with older CIP s/w and accessories plugged in.

My point is that I would question the dealer on the issue and look into it further.

The problem is BMW does not have a definite solution for this. If not driving a car for 2 or 3 weeks, then disconnect the battery cable to avoid current drain. Otherwise, it's shame to ask a Toyota Camry to jump start a $50K car

I just read a car test with the 116i.

The testers left the car in the garage for a weekend
but they didn't remove the "key" (it was with the start/stop buttom)
and the car did go completly dead.
Most journalists are not particulary well known to treat cars properly and so they write articles about there own stupid behavior - that makes me smile all the time

That is a shame. Why buy a car like this and drive a Camry all the time.
I know it's a shame not to drive the car all the time.

The reason is I work in L.A. and there's tons of construction going on with loose gravel and other debries on the road, which are easily kicked-up causing minor dings and scratches on the hood of my Camry and I surely don't want that to happen to my E60... :'(

I mostly drive on the weekends but due to travel I haven't been able to drive it consistently and hence the reason to get a trickle charger!!!

If you have a DC power inverter this will kill your battery. i.e. if you want to run AC to a computer or TV and leave the power inverter plugged in this will kill your battery over time. Just make sure you unhook this from the outlet after using.

Many times I have returned from a long trip at the airport to find my battery dead.

Hope this helps.

My car sat in the garage for ten months. My wife started it once a month but around the 7th month the battery went dead, but I jump started the car once I returned and all is well. I am going to get the lastest CIP update, plus I put in the AUX input and navi TV.

I called Irvine BMW (www.irvinebmw.net), and spoke with someone in the Parts Department. They told me that BMW makes battery charger, although its designed for models older then 2005. They don't have any chargers for newer models and BMW does not recommend using a trickle battery charger, since it may have an adverse impact on the electronics.

Thanks.

Any particular reason you do not want to follow the recommendations from the dealer on not to use a trickle charger??
