I took my car to a NY State Inspection site and they plugged their computer into the car's data port. They reported that the data port is faulty and not giving a reading. What do you think is involved in repairing this

Hmm... seems unlikely but take it to BMW and tell them what happened. If your check engine light is on you can also ask an auto parts store to see if they can pull a P-Code from the OBDII port.

The dealer tested and everything is fine. Seems the SMG threw off the inspection people. They have to key it in as a manual transmission and they probably entered auto. I'm going to try to get it right trw

Did the car give you errors for having only the rear wheel move and no from wheel movement?

I was thinking that'll make the electronics in the E60 go haywire...
