Call me pedantic but you must mean 20K not 40K if you had 5 in 100K miles!
FYC* On V-8s there is one on each cylinder bank. Care to *calculate that?

The problem is resolved for now. I had time to take the car in during lunch. It was a one time code for a vapor leak in the gask tank system. Possibly caused by the fuel cap but I doubt it since I hadn't filled up for a week when the light came on.
They reset it and we'll see what happens.
My X3 throws a "check fuel cap" light EVERY time I fill it up for a day or two. I'm suprised the 5er doesn't get that specific.

Another poster had the issue and replaced the gas cap and it went away for them. Not too expensive and it got rid of the annoying message. Try that for the X3.
I've learned to ignore warning lights that go away right away. About two weeks ago I got a "Active steering failure" light one morning after starting up and driving to work. It never hapened before and hasn't happened since. About once a week the "gas cap loose" warning comes on, even though the gas cap isn't loose. Unless a warning comes on and stays on, I'm guessing it's just the usual computer-glitch BS that goes on with these cars.

Just curious if yours is a stick or auto? My 98 E-39/6 speed was famous for blowing cat converters at around 40K (I went through 5 of them before trading at 101K miles) and it was the O2 sensor that always tipped me off (well, then came stumbling during hard acceleration--and there was always plenty of that!).
I learned that the then-new engine and standard transmission were not really compatable with the cat converters (at $1400 each, thank you); no such trouble occurred with the automatics though. The after-market parts guys had replacements, but they wouldn't warranty them, because they knew they would plug up--even earlier than the factory replacements. And that is why I went through FIVE--I had to buy another (OEM) one to replace a non-OEM one that lasted only a few thousand miles, but was "only" $800. What fun.
Good luck with it.

I had a yellow "engine light" on the entire way home. There were no Check Control messages, no issues listed in the iDrive service menu, no performance issues with the car, and no other warnings. I assume its a check engine light but there is absolutely no information about that light in the owners manual. A pic with the warning light circled is below.
This morning I did creep along in horrible traffic and then leave the car in the coldest weather it has seen so far. I wonder if its an O2 sensor warning. I've had them frequently (including the first month of ownership with the X3).
Any thoughts or will the dealer have to diagnose?

It specifically states-
"If the Fuel Cap is not properly tightened, the OBD system will assume that fuel vapor escapes. Then a display lights up. If the cap is then tightened, the display will go out within a few days"
I'm hoping this thing rectifies itself tomorrow before I have to take it in.
My car is remapped and I have an AFE CAI on it. I hope they don't kill my remap when they check the diagnostics?
So Cal
