My Ride: 2008 BMW 550i
2006 BMW X3
I had a yellow "engine light" on the entire way home. There were no Check Control messages, no issues listed in the iDrive service menu, no performance issues with the car, and no other warnings. I assume its a check engine light but there is absolutely no information about that light in the owners manual. A pic with the warning light circled is below.
This morning I did creep along in horrible traffic and then leave the car in the coldest weather it has seen so far. I wonder if its an O2 sensor warning. I've had them frequently (including the first month of ownership with the X3).
Any thoughts or will the dealer have to diagnose?

A loose gas cap would actually trigger an iDrive Check Control message (below). I've had intermittent issues in the past with a loose gas cap but it never triggered the check engine light on the instrument panel that you circled in red.
Sorry for the poor picture quality...

Ten bucks and a bottle of cold green Heiniken that it is an O2 sensor. Mine failed on the 550i about the same time, perhaps longer. Make sure that they have the sensor in stock before you let them operate on it.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
Just curious if yours is a stick or auto? My 98 E-39/6 speed was famous for blowing cat converters at around 40K (I went through 5 of them before trading at 101K miles) and it was the O2 sensor that always tipped me off (well, then came stumbling during hard acceleration--and there was always plenty of that!).
I learned that the then-new engine and standard transmission were not really compatable with the cat converters (at $1400 each, thank you); no such trouble occurred with the automatics though. The after-market parts guys had replacements, but they wouldn't warranty them, because they knew they would plug up--even earlier than the factory replacements. And that is why I went through FIVE--I had to buy another (OEM) one to replace a non-OEM one that lasted only a few thousand miles, but was "only" $800. What fun.
Good luck with it.
