Use Realoem.com and put in your VIN number to find the actual BMW part number.
Look at what parts are sold at sites like ECSTuning.com and FCPEuro.com. Of course a BMW part is fine, but the OE supplier with the BMW box is probably cheaper and there may be other alternatives that aren't from the OE supplier to BMW that are acceptable. You don't know what the house brand at AutoZone, for example, really is unless it has marking on the part.
ECSTuning and FCPEuro both offer lifetime warranties, so that might be worth it.
Check Rockauto.com with the information you now have. Check Amazon. Buying on Amazon I prefer Shipped and Sold by Amazon first and then a dealer with an Amazon store. Avoid stores that look like they could be selling junk or counterfeit. I recently sent back something to Amazon from seller "uxcell" because they were counterfeit fuses.
Sometimes I use Showmetheparts.com to see other brands that might work.
For very hard to replace stuff, I don't even think about off brands. For easier to replace stuff I might think about it depending on the price differential.
