Internally, it seems that the supplier of the drink holder parts to BMW have altered the composition or construction of the parts BUT BMW have NOT released the new items under new part numbers, as they would do if there was a substantial revision to a given part.
Therefore, the differences in the "modified and new" cupholders compared to the old ones must be very very slight!

Although I just picked up my car yesterday, I've decided to not even bother with the dashboard cupholders. At the suggestion of Robq (thanks!) I ordered and installed the Ultimate II cupholders. For 45 - 50 bucks a pair I think they're great! I put them in this morning in about two minutes. Now if I can get my kids to quit playing with the dash cupholders I don't think they will ever break (or be used)!

There was a post I was reading on this forum a few days ago, but can't find it at the moment. The writer was saying that there is a new design. Something about not launching his wifes pepsi can anymore.
Although BMW is not known for thier cupholders - or should I say, they are known for not knowing how to design one - I am one of those that would agree - what a surprise.
However, if you have the right cup, I have to say that I have not lost my coffee in the last year. Even with a few hard accels and turning. Granted, it needs to be a hard coffee cup - don't even try the gas station paper ones.
But, I am sure that day will come, and when it does, hopefully the all weather mats will curve some of my fustration.
Actually, my driving and hand movements have gotten fairly routine: Right foot increasing on the gas, left foot coming off the clutch, left hand on wheel, right hand switching between the gear shift and coffee cup. The first to second shift can be a critical turning point. Good thing I have blue tooth or I would be screwed.

Glad you like them. Just be careful you do not move your seat forward too much (or allow anyone else to). Had my wife do this once and it bent the cup holder so it looked like a pencil holder. It bent right back into shape, but I would not wantthis to happen too often.

I brought my car in today for the rough idle/running situation and also mentioned that the "new" cupholder that they replaced the last time I was in launches bottles, cans, ICBMs, whatever...
They agreed to replace it yet again under warranty (I love my dealership!).
The '05 525i that I have for a loaner has functioning cupholders, FWIW.

no no, some cars DONT have the cupholder slots and i think that's what kokotheclown is talking about, my car has no slots in the dashboard.
YES it is retrofitable... I asked my dealer once, but changing the least parts posible it would be around $600 dlls, so it depends on each ones budget, for me... its extremely expensive.
