Just FYI, I had the new door seals installed under warranty about three weeks ago, and it has completely fixed my rattling problem.

This is a classical BMW problem.

I have had this problem on most my BMW 4D cars since my BMW320i E36 back in 1997.
The latest problem was on my '04 E60.

I went to our local BMW dealer today as an consultant, 'cause one of my friends wants to buy a '02 E46 318iA. We made an test drive yesterday and the car had squeeky doors seals!

I talked with a bunch of techicans and they said that you should not use any silicone or such, and the wax also can make "creak" problems.

BMW has developed some sort of "cleansing petrol" for cleaning the seals.
Can be purchased at your local BMW dealer, but if your car is under warranty, be sure to get the problem fixed in time.

So this goes for the facelifted E46.

This might be off-topic, but anyway...

Yeah, the "cleansing petrol" solution (do a search on "carbaflo") has been around a while but it seems that BMW has finally solved the problem with a redesigned door seal.

I was interested in the results of this poll because many of us aren't experiencing the problem -- even with the original seals...

I didn't have this problem on my E61 - then decided to give it a spring clean and first ever wax polish, and since then has had creaking round the doors.

Can somebody explain which seals are thought to be creaking - round the windows or round the door itself

The key I've found to stopping creaking is:

* make sure the doors and seals are dry after washing
* apply rejex to the area where the seals touch the doors

This does work!

I was wondering if those who did not vote could vote on this? Times have pasted and I'd like to know the current status especially when the season is changing and the creaking should be more profound.

What is BMW doing about the creaking besides the door sill replace that doesn't help anyway? Design flaw?

Mine were creaking, it was fixed by dealer replacing the felt like strips on the top of all 4 doors. He explained to me that the felt like material causes this problem when contaminated with waxy car shampoo etc. They were changed under warranty, but I was told they only change them once, as I caused it by not washing car with correct ' BMW approved ' car wash. I do now use theirs as it is good stuff & to avoid it happening again..

I had my seals replaced under warranty and the creaking disappeared for a while.

Then it came back (I can't remember if this was related to waxing the car).

I now periodically wipe WD40 on the door seals and the creaking appears to have stopped.

Maybe that's why I get transmission slam, I don't wear a BMW approved glove whilst moving the stick !
