Hi,
Our 530dA is at the stealer right now for a oil change, and a CIP update.
The SA just called me and asked if they should clean the crank filter, something they usually does at this dealership at every 100.000 km's on the diesel engines.
It should be an easy job, since the engine air-filter was due for a change as well.
Where is this crank filter located on a 530d? I've heard about it before, but have no idea where it's located.

Crank Filter? I've never heard of that one but it's been a few years since I had a diesel car. Do the BMW Diesels use a "particulate filter"? Those are usually incorporated in the exhaust system. Check RealOEM.com http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mo...hg=18&fg=10

He is either talking about the Crank case breather Loo Roll tpe located left hand side of the head. Or the Strainer that is fitted before the oil pump. Never known of the strainer getting blocked on a BM. They used to get blocked all the time on the 1.8 Audi engine which caused oil starvation and knackered the shells.
Prob the Crank Case breather see below

That's exactly what I'm talking about! And you're right - they use to get blocked all the time on the 1.8T Audi engine. I've heard of several 330d's (E46) with the same issue.
