Happened to me as well. Tiny chip, then heat induced stress crack the following
day. My insurance covers everything - no deductible.

An update:
As expected, BMW would not replace underwarranty becasue of thesmall chip. I do have glass coverage though, and will now submit to the insurance co.

I had the same thing happen to me...
I washed the car Thursday night, put in the garage.
Came back Monday evening (3 days later) and there it was.
An 8 inch long horizontal crack beginning from the driver?s side pillar near the rear view mirror. Temperature was not an issue.
The dealer told me if it was a stress crack that it would be covered under warranty.
When I took it in the said there was a small indentation where a rock must have hit it.
I disagreed I saw no evidence of a rock impact.
So they replaced it under the warranty. Making me a happy BMW driver once again.

I've had a small stone chip in windscreen for about a year but as yet, no crack has formed. Is there anything that can be done as a preventative measure to keep it from turning into a crack?
