My Ride: 2005 BMW 530i Oriental Blue Metalic Beige InteriorPremium PackageCold Weather Package
Hi everyone! I got a 2005 BMW 530i and have a couple quick questions for you. I have always gone to the dealer for the oil changes. I actually travel 45 minutes to Carbone BMW in Utica, NY as I will never go to Burdick BMW in Syracuse, NY as they are a horrible dealer. So I was wondering does anyone think its a bad idea to take my car somewhere else like a Valvoline to get an oil change and obviously use synthetic oil? Not sure if I have to have "BMW synthetic oil". Also my 2nd question is I have noticed my gas mileage has decreased in the last couple weeks. I usually get 23-24mpg and now im around 19. All the normal things have been checked like tire pressure, microfilter, etc.. Anyone have any ideas on this issue?

I used to buy the oil online and take it to any shop. i pay in total $95. but not any more since the dealership charge me $120 and their oil last for longer

Mobil 0W-40 goes on sale at auto parts store for around $4 to $5 per qt. Keep an eye on the sales of the auto stores around you. When they go on sale, stock them up. Oil filter is around $10 on-line. It takes about half hour to change oil; first time it may take little longer. You will need to buy a pan to catch oil. It's worth the investment. In the long run, you'll save money and you can be confident what oil/filter is used in your car.
Furthermore, while changing oil, you will get an opportunity to look for leaks under the car.

I prefer not to change it myself. I don't mind paying someone to do it but was just wondering if I should definately use BMW synthetic oil. Also any tips on the gas mileage going down?

As for the MPG decrease, you don't say how many miles on your car, but others have mentioned new spark plugs have helped performance on higher mileage cars.

Like all have suggested, I would stick with BMW Synthetic. Do not go to Valvoline etc... I wouldn't trust them with this car.
Gas mileage - plugs, air filter (not micro or cabin filter as this will have no effect), and you can even remove the carbon filter in the top of the air filter housing - This has been the source of much debate but I can say it has made a few miles per gallon difference along with some additional hp's.
