lomag,

coolant is actually a pretty high tech liquid that is very much based on chemistry and electrolitic characteristics of the exact car. Many of the new cars have very specific needs for coolant that is quite different from the coolants of a few years ago. The wrong coolant can errode the metal surfaces of the radiator and act like a battery acid.

I wouldn't touch the old stuff with a 10 foot pole, not only because it could be the wrong chemistry, but also could have changed from its original state from mere age.

Go for the new stuff that is dead-nuts identical to spec. req's. It's worth the investment....
