My previous BMW's have all been manual tranmissions. When the weather was cold and I was in a hurry, shifting gears was always a little tougher until the car warmed up a bit. With SMG, I haven't felt any effects from the cold, as far as shifting.

My question is, is that just another feature of SMG being just that frigg'n awesome or is it just masking the fact that cold sport mode shifts are still tough on the parts of the transmission and slower shifting techniques should be used when the engine is cold...perhaps non-sport mode shifts.

I don't generally get into a cold car and riffle through the gears, but I've noticied on a couple of occasions when I was in a hurry that when pulling out into traffic, which requires speedy shifts on occassion, shows no cold shifting effects I've been used to.

Thanks,

Matt

I have SMG..... but I have no clue about your question.

I live in Florida. There is no such thing as cold.

Just thought I would rub that in....

Colder wheather makes oil more stiff and manual gearbox you can feel it. In SMG you don't have mechanical connection to gearleavers so you can not feel the diffenrence as long as hydraulics make it's work.

Stiff oil makes gears to disengage slower and that way synchronizing is slower. With totally wrong kind of oil for cold it's possible to make two gears to engage same time! This of course depending of type of gear levers. This has happend to me, but fortunately it was not a 4WD, I could jack rear wheels up and push car to the garage.
