Hard to see from that picture as I can't tell the frame of reference. Is the residue on the top side of the exhaust manifold?
And that hose fitting is a known weak point on the N54. ECS makes a billet replacement for the part that failed, and you use it with the OE hose for a robust replacement. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part...024797ecs01~a/

I will bring some more solid pics after removing the down pipes.
The old residue in the picture is that of what is coming out of the exhaust manifold and tracking down the external of the rear turbo (I mentioned earlier).
I have indeed replaced the thermostat to cylinder head cooling fitment with a more durable part.
