Rather a rash statement there, why do you think it is a potentially cancer causing key fob then. ?

I read this on Edmunds.com. Big debate on this. Could be something to it. Perhaps not. Could be a similar risk as with cell phones. Who knows?

Rented a '06 3 series in Europe on vacation with push-button start. Drove it 2,000 miles. It served no purpose at all except to confuse the parking attendents. Took an extra step in starting the car. Much prefer our ease of starting with our E-60s one turn key start. PUSH-BUTTON START---DON'T WANT IT ,DON'T NEED IT!

The debate over the possibility of pocket key fobs causing cancer is to be found on
Edmunds.com under the 2006 Lexus GS 300 forum thread. Search under "smart key."
Smart key is the Lexus equivalent to BMW's comfort access.

There is no differnce between what the comfort acess key puts out and what the "normal" key does, they both work on the same frequency

The key also does not transmit all the time ( unlike what many think )

You have to put hour hand in the door handle, which the car senses and then in less than 1 second it sends a small signal asking if there is a transmitter by that door, if there is the transmitter responds and then the door is unlocked

It gives off the same radiation as clicking your "normal" remote twice

So your normal remote will cause just as much cancer and the comfort access system

E60 is right. There is no more danger in these keys. I can tell you that other than for the nifty feature, many auto makers are looking at this a way to actually SAVE cost in the future. The mechanical ingition switch (like all things mechanical) is expensive relative to electronics. This is similar to drive by wire and other places where you will see electronics replace cables, linkages and other mechanical parts.

Of course what does this mean but......more SOFTWARE and more ability to enhance the car over time with better programs etc. Of course we all have to deal with the bugs too....

At least they seem to fix them over time....

Keyless entry with multi-function remote control is standard
Comfort Access keyless entry with multi-function remote control is optional

Does the start/stop ignition button come standard or is it a feature of the comfort access?

Where did you get a brochure? My sales rep. still knows nothing about the 550. They know its coming, but have no details. I can't even order one yet because it has not hit their system (computer) yet. I am in a small town, but damn, what is the deal?

Your sales rep is an idiot then. www.bmwusa.com. He had better get his act together because the 2006 550i starts in next weeks production.
