Yesterday, I experienced several times when upon releasing the brake from a stand still, the car surged, but it was more of a bump forward, almost like dropping the car into drive with the accelerator slightly pressed down.

Because the car had only been started a while, I'm guessing it may have had something to do with it idling a little fast, but it wasn't a smooth surge. Almost felt like the brakes were releasing late and then dropping car into gear.

Anyone else experience something similar?

1st - Welcome to the forums. In order for us to assist you better, please update your profile info with location, year, and model information at the least. Without knowing the year, mileage, transmission type, or engine type, a hail-Mary guess is perhaps as you surmise the RPMs were higher than normal. Was the car fine once it hit normal temps?

Seems to be a common issue, at least with 2004/2005 models. This doesn't seem to be random. I get this 100% of the time when taking off from the exact same spots, meaning that it must have something to do with the computer figuring out taking off from certain situations such as slightly uphill with slight acceleration, etc. Obviously it doesn't figure things out quite right.

Welcome to the Forum bash535i,

Where are you from and how cold is it there?

Both the engine and the trans needs some warming up
to work proper, by driving slowly, if it is really cold.

2008 535i
5000 miles
auto
outside temp about 30 degrees

Have only noticed it during the first 20 minutes of operation. It's definitely more than just the RPMs being up a little. I is a solid, definite jolt when letting off the brake pedal and applying the throttle.
