Hi, I had a look at the Foxwell and the new model with the BMW stuff on it is a bit more than I want to pay at £199.00? thanks Paneuro.

Don't go to cheap compromise elsewhere, Remember you get what you pay for. Buy what your comfortable paying for that will perform at your level, don't expect to much from cheap devices.

Here’s my 2 cents…

I agree that Foxwell and Schwaben make the best entry level scanners for BMW. They’re good for most maintenance and come preloaded with a few device activation scripts for testing commonly replaced parts. Real-time data reporting is useful but far from perfect for novice users. Neither has DME programming capabilities for tuning or adding retrofitted options. Cost is $150-200.

iCarsoft has a BMW supported version of their BMM car scanner. It’s a larger handheld device w a bigger screen. Like the entry level scanners it operates using preloaded maintenance and device activation scripts. Real-time data reporting is more meaningfully displayed and useful. Unfortunately DME programming is limited to typical maintenance tasks and a short list of device replacements. Cost is $250-280.

BMW’s INPA and/or ISTA D are dealer-level software diag tools for your car. Both can be a pain to install but are certainly the GOLD standard when troubleshooting engine performance issues or replacing parts. Both come w a steep learning curve mostly due to the detailed UI. This can be easily solved by searching the many YouTube videos that exist. Cost is free.

Agree that iCarly is a simple BMW code reader. It’s shine is the added DME programming for part retrofits and deletions. Before iCarly, DME enhancements seemed almost impossible without a coding background and a host of different software tools. Dean is correct that iCarly can be dangerous if not used correctly. Bimmertools, Protools and a few others are very similar.

Hi, maybe I would be better just leaving sleeping dogs lie, I just noticed a post by a newcomer and he seems to be knee deep in SH-T with this INPA and ISTA. If I can solve the issues I have at the moment I'll be quite happy. thanks Paneuro.

Don’t be intimidated. I’d suggest you check YouTube for ISTA D installation and usage videos. It’s not difficult to learn and in the long run you’ll appreciate the recommendation. Dean has a good intro vid on use. There are many others that can help w installation. Good luck and don’t forget the interface cable.

BTW. I bet you’re experiencing a prob w the glow plug controller. ]

Your most probably right about the glow plug module as 6 glow plugs just don't go faulty! I have already bought a new module but I'm considering if I should renew the glow plugs as well while I have the inlet manifold of. I would not like to break any of them while trying to get them out.
I have watched a few of Dean's vids but he talks so quick and seems to gloss over things which I find a little difficult to understand . I think he needs to slow down a bit and explain things more clearly, however I will have a look at what you suggest. Is ISTA D Free to download and install and what kind of cable do I need /. Thanks Paneuro.

A Bimmergeeks Pro K+DCAN cable is what you need.
