Hi, I've got a few issues with my 530 D and I have a Carly reader but it's just not doing much. It has being telling me I have 6 faulty glow plugs since I got it 4 years ago but I have never had a problem starting the car. Now I have an engine check light on and its still telling me about the faulty glow plugs while the I drive is telling me I have an emission problem. I watched a video on you tube from Doctor dean and the evaluation he gave on Carly was not good. anybody got any thoughts on what I should get? thanks paneuro.

 

Any BMW Code Reader should work.

I do not consider Carly a BMW Code Reader. It does more than generic OBDII readers but its cursory at best.

 

If you have an Android phone, you could download Deep OBD for free. Get a K+Dcan cable for <$20 off of Amazon or ebay, an OTG USB adapter, and have an INPA level code reader on your phone. And that gets you step closer to putting INPA and ISTA on a laptop to do even more if you need to.

Buy a stand alone reader, and all you need to do is plug it into your OBD2 Port. Why complicate things?

BMW Code Readers cost as low as $44.

 

Hi, do you have any particular preference in mind as I would not have much of an idea what make to go for?

 

I use veepeak reader and it has helped me with read quite a few codes. Like HPFP,cylinder missfire, etc. Not trying to sell you this one but just an FYI.

 

Hi, I have had a quick look at Veepeak and it looks to be similar Idea as the Carly however I will have a look in depth and then ask for opinions on what others think. In the meantime I'm getting this code on the Carly -: 004501 and it says exhaust gas recirculation control, I'm thinking EGR valve ? I have already replaced the crankcase vent with the updated one and it made no difference. Incidentally when I removed the old vent it had no filter in it. thanks Paneuro.

 

I use a Schwaben with is a Foxwell 510. It does about everything the one the dealer uses can do. They have a new one that is pre-loaded for BMW that looks very good. Google foxwell.

 

I'd have to see this foxwell 510. I know it does a lot but not close to what the dealership has. The 510 is a good tool for the common BMW DIYer and should be recommended to anyone trying to do maintenance. I would say at minimum this is the best one in the price range if it does everything it says it can do.
