my SMG 525's clutch overheated today after a bit of stoping and going on a hill, looking for parking. has anyone else experienced this? luckily as it happened I had already parked, and didn't have to move the car much anymore. it started to shudder as if it was going to stall. when I got back in the car, I got the error message again and the car shuddered as I was driving off uphill. it soon went away and drove normally after that. has anyone else with SMG experienced anything like this before?
PS. I'm loving SMG but I noticed that the car tends to roll a little bit (about a second) on hills before the transmission engages and the car goes forward.

BEFORE BUYING MY E60 I HAD AN ALFAROMEO 156 SELESPEEED WITH AN SMG GEARBOX. WHAT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF IS THAT YOUR CAR IS MORE LIKE A MANUAL RATHER THAN AN AUTOMATIC i.e you have an automatically regulated clutch therefore it would be advicable that on hills when you come to a stand still always use your hand brake. It is not strange that your car rolls back (like a manual car does on a slope) it does this until the cluth engages so you can move off. Therefore use the handbrake on slopes and your clutch will not overheat.

In the operation manual it says if you are in heavy traffic or in stop-and-go up a long grade and you get the clutch overheat warning, you can accelerate more quickly to cool things down. Presumably, a quicker engagement equal less clutch slippage and less heat.
Never happened to me though.

In addition to the SMG being more like a manual (i.e. rolling backwards until the clutch engages), it's very important that you don't "ride the clutch" by holding yourself on a hill with the gas pedal (as you might do with an automatic transmission).

In other words, keep your foot on the brake until you are ready to move forward. When you're ready to move forward, press the gas until you have to stop again. Using the gas to creep the car forward or creep the car up a hill in stop and go traffic is just as bad for the clutch as riding the clutch in a traditional manual -- don't do it!!
