Good question! Our roads are fine and the car has done 100k mls, of which most on the highway.
So I don't see any reason either. Even my 23yr old vw gti still has its first.
The same thing happened with the transmission, the main shaft bearings went out at 70k for no apparent reason

Rafasjaen I have just got the same noise coming out from my E60 530xd. Do you know what was the problem ? I am getting the same noise when turning left or right even with very small turning angle. I hear the noise when the car is not moving and when moving with speed up to 30=40 km/h
I would be happy if you could give me a clue
