Unhappy

Im having a hard time deciding on which car to get, a white CLS500 or a white 550i with nav, comfort access and M aero kit. I drove both cars and performance wise the bmw takes the benz. But since the benz is soo nice looking i can't decide which to get. Please help me decide and list your opinions. Thanks!

Get the 550i.. it's more rare on the road and the CLS500 is gonna change to CLS 550 pretty soon.

If you dont mind me asking how do you know the CLS 500 is going to change to CLS 550? Because of benz changing the benzes to 550's? or what?

Likely as the New S-Class is a S550 and I heard the E will be a 550 as well.

I believe German automakers like to minimize the number of engines to minimize costs as well as keep up in the horsepower race. BMW changed the 645 to a 650 after only one year due to the new 550 and BMW will likely replace the 530i with a 535i when the 3.5L makes its debut in the 3-series.

Okay well I may be a bit biased, I don't have the M aero kit - but I did get the sport package (124 wheels) and euro reflectors...This vehicle is amazingly quick as you know, but the thing that really grabs me is whenever the valet drives up with her or I'm walking up to her in a parking lot among regular cars the effect is stunning! The lines and overall fluid design are pure and delightful to look at when its by itself, however when put in with the masses it can distinguish itself in a postive way from the Bentley GT Continental which is always valet parked with my 550. Perhaps the greatest respect you'll ever have is when its parked amoung other high end sedans - it somehow refuses to fit in retaining its almost insulting stance. Giving the unapproving glare to the rest of the market...the designers know this car has what it takes to pull off a certain arrogance, and so the basic lines demand respect and praise regardless of your personal opinion. It knows its beautiful...The 550 is a unique and tastful vehicle that will never dissapoint, and when the body style is no longer the newest and the visual appeal is taken for granted with time - the tune of that 4.8ltr V8 singing effortlessly as it transports you to speeds acceptable for small aircraft to take off and the handling superiority that comes with the territory will have you smiling even after you've exited the "pilot's" seat. Hands down the 550, I mean who can say no to this face? (Refer to signiture)

Agree with Rolex regarding the handling - absolutely no comparison for the 550 Sport vs. the CLS.

If you decide on the 550 Sport (highly recommended) with comfort seats, I would wait for the '07 which people on this board say will be out very soon. The '07 will include the comfort seats as part of the sports package so you may save up to $1200 on an apples-to-apples comparison.

Given this is a BMW board you will get biased opinions but I believe the 5-series is a more complete package. I would also guess the CLS's novelty would wear off.

Options that seem popular with members that you did not list:
1) Sport Package (HIGHLY recommended)
2) Comfort Seats (HIGHLY recommended) - available as part of sport pack for '07
3) Logic 7 (I like it alot but some seem to think its pricey at $1800)
4) Active Steering (I prefer it. However you will not miss it if you never test drive an AS-equipped car)
5) Cold Weather Package (depends on your climate but nice even in 60 degree weather)
6) Sat Radio (do not know but some have mentioned it doesn't sound great)

One additional thought - the auburn interior looks very nice with the 550's white exterior. Also, I would make sure the M-Kit looks good on white before you order - check the photo gallery.

That is my $0.02 - hope it helps.

If you are buying based on looks, then just get the one you like the best. Styling is so personal, asking another person about which car looks better is really a nonstarter.

If you are inquiring about handling and performance, I would say the 2 are just different types of cars. One is not necessarily better (in any real objective sense) than the other. The CLS is more a luxury cruiser that can take the ocaisional twisty without breaking too much of a sweat. The 550i, on the other hand, is really a sports sedan that really shines when you start talking about things like G-forces, lateral grip, etc. Buy the one that suits your needs/wishes/desires/criteria the most.

Good luck and come back to visit even if you decide on the Merc.
