I'm having a similar problem. Most mornings I find that the time, date, and tripmeter have reset themselves and I get a message on the display that the active steering isn't...umm, 'active'. I bought the car CPO 13 days ago and the dealer said it was a battery problem - the car sat on their lot for over three months and the battery won't take a full charge. My dealer said to bring it in for a battery swap.

+1 for a new battery..
for me, the clock was getting slower, always a few minutes behind from the day before....a few times I had to reset the clock all together...finally got a high battery discharge warning, took it in to the dealer...they replaced the battery...no problems since..all this happened over a 6 month time span (2 yrs into my new e60)...

Yes, it may very well be a bad battery but unless I missed a detail somewhere, it could be something keeping the car from sleeping properly that's causing a drain.
Bottom line is that when the date/time is showing up as dashes, the car determined the battery charge was low enough to risk the car not starting so it shut down less important electrical consumers to maximize the chances of the car being able to start...

I had the same problem last year. As 'Rudy' suggested, the battery was OK but the car was not going to sleep so the battery was wearing down between start-ups. One of the first items to be shut down (to conserve power) is the 'date/time' function.
However, depending on the age of the battery, it could be due for a replacement as well.
