[quote name='Iceman' date='Jan 14 2005, 08:58 PM']Well, I think now you are only confusing it totally.
Even BMW speaks about the software releases as "s/w versions/CIP's 15, 15.1, 15.2", etc...?

No, I checked and I'm correct. It also makes perfect sense. You have to think in terms of CIP version and car software version - two different things!!

BMW may speak about the software to the dealers in terms of 15.x, but what I'm telling you above it true. A dealer may need to update E60s, E90s, etc. So they get a CIP DVD/CD or download the CIP of version XX.X from BMW. And that CIP includes individual software packages (some updated and some not - that's why the correlation doesn't always work) for all the cars marked E060-XX, E90-XX, etc. So it makes perfect sense for BMW to talk to the dealers in terms of CIP XX.X. After all that *IS* the CIP version. The dealer doesn't get different CIP DVDs/etc for E60s or for E90s or for E81s, etc. It's all in one large CIP distribution package which contains smaller individual car packages. So again, it makes sense to have a CIP version number - in fact it's even printed on the DVD/CD. But again, the CIP version is NOT the car software version. It simply is NOT!

I imagine at times you CAN correlate your car's software version back to the CIP version, but re-read my post above - you can't always do it and why even bother? If the E90 package was updated and pushed into the 15.2 CIP distribution, but the E60 package did not get updated, a user from the 15.1 CIP distribution will have the same version for his E60. The E90 user will not, but the E60 user will. The only way you can tell is by looking in the CIP distribution to see if your E60 package version changed. And from what my dealer told me and showed me, 15.0, 15.1, and 15.2 ALL have the exact same E060-04-09-555 - your car's software version.

I was initially confused as well, but it's not so complicated if you start to think in the terms I've described. It makes NO sense to say my car has software version 15.1 when that is in fact a CIP version! Let's say you have Windows XP SP2 on your PC. Do all components (wordpad, Media Player, etc.) have the same version number? No. Think of it like this.

What you are saying makes perfect sense. In the IT world, the CIP would be the loader and along with the loader comes the actual software version.

This is reversed in the IT world:
If i download v1.1 of a server/router/etc BIOS, v1.1 refers to the actual version of the software wheres it may come along with v.091 of the loader.

If a week later i download v1.2 of the server/router/etc BIOS, v1.2 refers to the actual version of the software wheres as it may still use v.091 of the loader.

It would be like using v.091 to refer to the version of BIOS i am using to update my hardware instead of using version of the actual software. If a month later that v.091 loader becomes v.098 but the firmware is still v1.2, there is no reason to upgrade...

So in the BMW world when v13.x, etc is used it sounds like the family version is what is being referred to and not the version of the "children" in the family.

if this helps:

13.0
---e90 v333
---e65 v444
---e60 v500

13.1
---e90 v339 <----------Only the software for the e90 changed, not the e60 or e65
---e65 v444 ---- no reason to upgrade your e60.
---e60 v500

funny, if the dealers are the ones that started using the CIP to refer to the version of software being used,
no wonder i've read so many posts of how some dealers keep the car for days(the uninformed ones)to do a
software ONLY update vs the dealer who performs the software ONLY update in a day(informed ones)...

now it's starting to all make sense...

if you take your car to a dealer and ask what's the latest version of software for your e60 is and he says v15.2....RUN!!!

or your car will be there for next few days while the mechanic trys to figure out
why the version didn't increase from from 15.0 to 15.1, and tells you that the upgrade failed and they have to do it again....

Like I pointed out. 15.0 - 15.2 are EXACTLY the same as far as the E60 is concerned. Maybe 16.0 will be too. If we can determine that, and we easily can (Status report!!), THEN we can have meaningful discussions on whether we need to upgrade, should we wait, etc. Like I said, I can now tell you that if you are holding out for 15.2 because you think 15.0 is not good enough, don't! They are the same for the E60. THIS is useful, no?

Just read the whole thread and all these posts.

YES! This makes TOTAL sense and this information is VERY useful. Yes, the dealers refer to it as CIP XX.XX. But they just don't deal with or care only about E60s. WE DO!

For those who find the Full SW Version confusing, let's hope you don't end up taking in your cars for upgrades to 15.0, followed by 15.1 and then 15.2...

To those that disagree with urbo73, I just don't think you get it. Please take the time to re-read what he has said, it makes perfect sense. I'm just surprised at how patient urbo73 is with you all that just don't get it. If you do so, an appology to urbo73 might be in order?

Urbo73's first explaination made good sense to me. Maybe cause I haven't been involved in trying to get updates yet. However, I now know what additional information to look for (and ask for) and will endevor to include any and all identifying information including CIP info as well as software versions whenever I can.
