I've got the same problem on my 05 545i with 1200 miles on it.? It almost sounds like an engine knock or detonation. I'm headed in for service next week.

A "ticking" is not what I have, that sounds like a sticky lifter. I have a "chirp" that's a combination of vacumm leak and squeaky pulley sounds (not that it is necessarily either one of those). Anyway I've noticed that mine won't do it after just sitting overnight. I'm just about to check whether sitting over two nights (about 36 hours) will cause it.

I've also experienced this "chirp" on cold mornings - and it is especially articulated when reversing. Resonance inside my garage makes me hear the sound very clearly when it's there.. and it seems to come when I engage the clutch, backing out of the garage. The sound may be present when driving forwards, but it's less obvious.

I have it occasionally but it is really quiet and only lasts a few seconds.

By the way, a reply from BMW customer relations on this site?

Thanks for your offer of assistance.

At this time the sound only repeats if the car has been sitting unused for 3-4 days. I will keep an eye (or ear) on it and see what happens over time.

I have responded to you by email.

Sometimes ya... hardly... once in a blue moon they'll pop in and then read the newest problem thread and offer their documentation service.

They did that with my post on road fly... I called them gave them the Reference number and they said Oh ya we just wanted you to let us know your VIN so we can document the problem... so basically useless help, didnt have a solution for me and still no solution to date
