Just picked up my '05 545i last Thursday. I started it up Friday morning with no problem but this afternoon when I started it (didn't start it since Friday) I could hear a fairly loud chirping sound from what seemed the front of the engine. I could swear that I read about someone else having this but I searched without success. Could it be the serpatine belt or accessory pulleys or is it a normal artifact of VANOS or Valvetronic? Any ideas. Car runs fine and the noise went away after a just a few minutes. Curious because I wouldn't consider this to be normal.

Yes, I have same noise.. it's like much of diesel noise from the engine. I took to dealer and spoke with service director. He told me, this is normal for cold weather. so I couldn't much about it.. need to trust their word..

How long does the "chirp" last?

Cobra Judy / Observation Island. That brings back memories.

Ah, I think that's what I remember reading. Thanks.

Yep, the chirp lasts a few minutes then goes away. My guess is AC compressor/pulley shaft, inadequate lubrication. Funny that it would make noise with less than a 100 miles as that means it's bad from the start (i.e. manufacture/assembly).

I'll keep an eye (ear) on it and see what happens.

Thanks again.

Unhappy

I've got the same problem on my 05 545i with 1200 miles on it. It almost sounds like an engine knock or detonation. I'm headed in for service next week.

I have the same problem, when you start it up a few seconds later it starts like a rattling/sputtering when you let it idle.
