Just picked up my '05 545i last Thursday. I started it up Friday morning with no problem but this afternoon when I started it (didn't start it since Friday) I could hear a fairly loud chirping sound from what seemed the front of the engine. I could swear that I read about someone else having this but I searched without success. Could it be the serpatine belt or accessory pulleys or is it a normal artifact of VANOS or Valvetronic? Any ideas. Car runs fine and the noise went away after a just a few minutes. Curious because I wouldn't consider this to be normal.

Yes, I have same noise.. it's like much of diesel noise from the engine. I took to dealer and spoke with service director. He told me, this is normal for cold weather. so I couldn't much about it.. need to trust their word..

Ah, I think that's what I remember reading. Thanks.
Yep, the chirp lasts a few minutes then goes away. My guess is AC compressor/pulley shaft, inadequate lubrication. Funny that it would make noise with less than a 100 miles as that means it's bad from the start (i.e. manufacture/assembly).
I'll keep an eye (ear) on it and see what happens.
Thanks again.

Sounds like what I had - they replaced the AC compressor
