I am wondering if anyone has changed to royal purple engine oil. I decided to buy my car at my lease end and now am thinking more long-term. Is it also better to change oil more often than bmw recomends which is a really long time? Is there anyone who has heard or tried royal purple. I have seen some good things about this stuff.

My buddy w/ 330 swears about how good the RP oil is on Inline 6 3.0
So I assume it would work as good w/ 545 as long as the oil is Grp IV oil.

BMW recommends 15K miles but I change mine @ 7.5K.
I use either German Castrol 0W-30 or Shell Rotella T 5w-40.

mmm, actually I started a thread back in Dec on Royal Purple.....not much discussion about it then as people were concerned that it wasn't a "BMW Spec Approved Oil"....... http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=68079
On page two I posted an email that a Royal Purple rep had sent me.....
Here it is again......

"Keith,

The BMW spec they are suggesting are oils that have paid a licensing fee to BMW to display that approval. Typically this is an oil manufactured in Europe and imported to the US driving the cost up without any performance advantages over the US Manufactured oils that have not agreed to pay a licensing fee to BMW. This is a fundamental difference in the way oils are approved - in the US - there is a general spec agreed upon by the OEM's while in Europe, each manufacturer sets there own specification - such as VW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, BMW, Opel, Fiat, and Renault - each setting their own approval standards.

We recommend using either the RP 5W30 for your BMW 4.8L V8 32 valve engine - this takes 8.5 quarts.
This meets and exceeds the performance levels of the BMW LL98 / 01 specifications although we can not list these on the packaging as we have not paid the licensing fees to do so.

Thanks for the email and choosing to use RP.

thanks a lot, I did a search actually and not much discussion came up so thought maybe some new readers had something to contribute, hence a new post.

Thanks for the email. I think I will make the switch.

Which viscosity are you going with 5W-30 or 5W-40. I may try this for my next oil change do you know a shop that carries 5W-40, thanks. Btw anyone have any other good high-performance oil recommendations and what viscosity is recommended for our E60s?

I'll just stick with the bmw recommended viscosity for my engine, which is 5w-30, I think. Your local Advanced Auto or Kragen carries it, or you can order it from their parent company.... http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail....artNumber=01530
Also, Summit Racing carries it

Is that the same engine oil that they use to call Royal Triton ( purple in color), many years ago?
cheers
