Let me give another point of view, and hope that the system works this way. We have been driving MTs since 1973. Not that I am a difficult passenger, mind you, but lots of times my wife is in the wrong gear. She sometimes forgets to upshift when she reaches cruising speed and just leaves it in fourth at say 3300 RPM instead of dropping it to fifth for maybe 2500 RPM. Then she catches the look on my face, goes umm, and upshifts.
So, I would hope, that when you rev it up, then lightfoot it but dont drop it to the higher gear, the system will give a light bulb someplace. When I got my foot in it and running it through the paces, the light should stay off.

FWIW, the US manual does not mention this indicator. I'll confirm one way or the other on Thursday.

An indicator's an indicator and you don't have to select it (it's in the same place as MPG/MPH average - edit: or is it??). So long as the damn thing doesn't BONG if you DO have it selected!

My LCI USMY08 528i 6M does not have this indicator.
It is just not activated by default. You can activate or de-activate this "feature" by a push-n'-hold of a button
(Push and hold the BC button for 3 secs or so to activate or de-activate)
This was the case with my car and it wasn't easy to find it in the manual.
The indicator just suggests optimal gear for lowest gas consumption... just the arrows and digit, no sound or anything. Very discrete. The indicator is also much smaller than what's shown on the pic in this post.
Up or down arrow together with a digit suggest to gear up or down to indicated gear.
With both up/dwn arrows displayed w no digit, optimal gear is selected.
/cheers

Do you know which button. I'm not a fan of these indicators, but I'd like to see it work. Like hinckley said, I haven't seen it mentioned in my manual.
Pls post if you get it to work!

My Ride: E60 525d M-Sport Saloon M57N2 3.0d LCI
EXTERIOR: Jet Black, ///M-Aerodynamic Bodystyling, ///M-Rear Spoiler, De-badged, Gradual Tint Windscreen, ///M-Double Spoke 172M 19" Alloy Wheels (with non-run flats & space saver spare wheel) & ///M-Sports Suspension;
INTERIOR: ///M-Steering Wheel, Black Dakota Leather Heated Sports Seats with Electric Lumbar Supports, Brushed Aluminium Interior Trim & Anthracite Headlining.
For what it's worth, I have had my LCI for 1 week now. This feature is pretty good IMHO. It advises the best gear for a given situation which the driver can follow or choose to ignore - there are indeed situations where the driver knows better. However, up to now I have found that the advice given is more than adequate for the engine to cope with in most situations and presumably the computer knows best if this is actually saving fuel. It is an even better feature IMHO as it is well positioned in the dash and can easily be ignored and there are no annoying sounds / distractions to complement it. The feature does indeed need enabling by means of holding the BC button for 3 seconds.
