What format digital audio files does our CD player read and play?

Most interested in AAC files known as M4A format.

I think I have my answer.......the CD player will not play AAC formatted files, in fact will not list any M4A files in the directory. I tried to "trick" the player and renamed the M4A files to MP3 and found then that the player showed them in the directory but unsurprisingly the player would not play them.

It will play MP3 files sampled at 192kbps or less. It will not play back the variable rate mp3's.

Not true for me. Variable bit rate MP3s play well for me. I also have tracks at 320kbs that work fine. The key however is to ensure that the sample rate is 44Hz.

My experience is that VBR MP3's don't always work - some files do, some don't. The 44.1Khz sample rate is the "standard" for CD quality sound. Lowering this rate doesn't make much sense because it reduces overall sound quality.

I have been playing around and have come to the sad conclusion that indeed the player has a limited range of digital music formats. Sad because just less than 1/2 my collection is in AAC format. So I have had my quad core converting 5092 AAC files to MP3's.

Using JHymn, works well, all automated but sloooooow. Been processing for 12 hours and still have over 2000 files to convert.
