That may mean it's a CCC issue. The screen has not bearing on sound and control issues. I believe the CCC had issues and there is a repair service for it. Don't quote me on that though.

OP - I like many others have had exactly the same issue. The problem is the CCC unit, the design of these older iDrive units result in the circuit boards getting hot and some of the contacts become loose. You can get the unit repaired (or even try and fix it yourself?) but how long it will last is questionable as the design is prone to failure. I decided to upgrade to the newer CIC unit that has an inbuilt hard drive that stores the maps for the navigation and can store your music collection. These newer CIC units don't rely on a dvd drive continually running your navigation CD, which is prone to excessive heat build up.
The previous owner of my car had already had the CCC unit repaired (around £300) but it only lasted 2 years. If you buy a second hand CCC unit you've no guarantee the fault won't reoccur at anytime so either get it repaired with as long a warranty as possible or replace with the CIC unit that were fitted from around 2008 on the LCI cars. You can even go one step further and fit the NBT iDrive, but these won't work with a HUD if fitted.
If you decide to fit an aftermarket Android head unit, these essentially replace the iDrive screen and are a cost effective solution but you must have a fully working CCC unit before fitting.

I should add there is also a fuse in the back of the CCC unit that if you're lucky has blown and can simply be replaced. You'll need to take the CCC unit out of the dash to get access to this fuse but worth checking before you spend any money. Also check the normal fuses in the car incase one of them has blown, there are several that supply the iDrive.
