Caught a flat

You're running very low profile tires ... With them it's virtually impossible to "see" if the tire pressure is low. You should ALWAYS confirm with a tire gauge. Driving only a few miles with an under-inflated conventional tire will cause the failure you have experienced.
BTW, that's one of the benefits of RFTs ... and if it's any consolation I too had a TPMS alert yesterday. Checked the rear tire visually (245/40x18) - looked OK but when I checked it with a gauge it was at 30psi (instead of 42). Pumped it up to 45psi and called my indy mechanic 5 miles away. Drove there Removed a drywall screw and patched it up.
No tire harm ... slight inconvenience.
My advice to you ... keep a good digital tire gauge in your car. And a compact 12v compressor is cheap insurance if you don't have RFTs. (DO NOT use those cans of flat tire repair goo)

I strongly doubt that you'd get anything back. Driving a good distance on a low profile tire with little air will destroy the tire. The ensuing damage is the driver's fault -- not that of the manufacturer. Sorry bro but I doubt that BMW or the tire manufacturer would give you one red cent.

Keeping a 12v compressor and digital pressure guage in the car is good advice.
Just yesterday I had the cause to use both - which saved me a long wait by the side of the freeway / motorway.
If your tyre is run-flat, sometimes the hard side wall can break through the tyre when running on it flat, like a pizza-cutter.
Incidentally, in Europe we don't get those emergency wheels as standard, I just purchased mine from BMW for $200 !!! I think it it something to do with regulatory type approval in the US vs Europe.
