Kinda funny... maybe someone there will suggest something, but I really do think its the brake/starting thing.... the car recognizes your key. It will not start without engaging the brake - look into it.

Don't think it can be a brake issue, because the iDrive actually says "to start engine, press brake pedal" if you aren't pressing it. The key symbol on the dash leads me to think that the car is not recognising the immobiliser chip in the key, and hence not letting you start it. Try starting car with the spare/wallet key.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
i walked outside to test the key again, same issue the car wont start....
i doubt its the key battery because it still locks & unlocks the doors.
when inserted into the drivers side i can still roll the windown up and down
i can pop the trunk from a small distance away......
and one more thing it was my mistake the key symbol is NOT on the iDrive screen,
the yellow key symbol is appearing directly on the dash board....
the car is still chiming, when the key is in all the lights are still functionining.
so i finally decided to take it back where i bought it after 2 days they finally told me that they believe that the car is NOT recognizing the key for some reason.
so they in returned took it back to bmw to reprogram the key..... hopefully it is not something more serious then this.

So much bad info on this thread.
A dead keyfob battery has NO (zero, nada) relationship to its ability to start the car. It DOES have a battery that is charged by the car, but the batteries do eventually wear out (just like a Tesla) and need to be replaced.
Make sure the car knows it's in Park, and your foot is on the brake. Sometimes, you might be able to "row" the shifter through the gears a couple times and temporarily fix a bad gearshift position sensor (which will only just give you the time to fix / align / replace it).
