I saw a posting in this forum about car warming. Its about 1yr old. Is everyone driving off their car without warming their car as suggested by most in that thread.

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?show...40&hl=car+warm

I usually never warm any of my cars and I am just wondering if I should do the same to my BMW car as well. So far, I am just driving off without even warming it.

What do u guys do.

I voted no. But, I warm it before accelerating extra quickly. I do that in the summer too.

Drive off slowly. Its better to warm everything up all together instead of just the engine. Transmission Gearbox etc all needs to be warmed up too.

But then again this is LA weather. only about upper 30s to lower 40s in the morning so its not THAT COLD...

If it gets below 20s I would let the engine warm for about 30 seconds or so then drive off and let everything warm up at the same time.

Me the same. Good advice. Not really cold enough in Phoenix to think much about warming up.

I guess with 25~30 degree temperatures in Detroit during winter, I guess I will have to change my driving habit .....warm it for sometime or drive slowly without undue acceleration.

Thanks for your input guys

Sounds good. Your are very welcome for whatever I contributed. A good friend of mine moved to Detroit this summer from Phoenix. He has some adjusting to do. Drives an M3; it will be his first experience with snow tires. HO HO HO, and a Merry Xmas to ....

I've a DEFA heater installed in our car, it runs on 220 V, and it's great.. When under 5 C, I use it for an hour before I drive of, and the oil gets warm and nice, which is great for the engine on cold winterdays!

If I don't use it I drive of at once - that's the best for the engine!

I should note that when it is below zero F here, I fire the car up and let the clutch out and run it in neutral for maybe a minute. That's probably not necessary with a new car with stick, but as they age, and the lubes get to be thick, it often helps a bit loosen up the linkage etc.

Cheers,

It's cold here too (-2F this morning). Turn key, drive. No muss, no fuss. Takes about 5-7 minutes to get the freeway where it actually gets going so I suppose I'm "taking it easy" for the first few miles by default.
