I do not think it matters. Most of this is from the old days without all of the nifty synthetic lubricants we have. Also - the do not let it sit an idle theory was based on overheating in older cars. So IMHO - do whatever you want.

It depends on my windshield. Sometimes i get so much ice on my windshield that i have no choice but to wait a bit longer..maybe 2 to 3 min. Not my fault..the windshield..but if it was not for that..i would just start and drive off.

My understanding on this issue is that BMW recommends to drive off immediately for emission control reasons and not for engine protection. They have said that warming up your car slowly is much better for the engine but the CAT doesn't warm up quickly enough and you give off too many nasty fumes.

I should note that when it is below zero F here, I fire the car up and let the clutch out and run it in neutral for maybe a minute. That's probably not necessary with a new car with stick, but as they age, and the lubes get to be thick, it often helps a bit loosen up the linkage etc.

Ya when its reaching extreme cold I would suggest warming it up a little like a mintute or two but NOT like 5 10 mins till the engine is fully warm.
But ya like dgjk said... doesnt matter do whatever you want. Probably personal preference.

When you start up your car, the idling speed is usually around 1000rpm, so I wait till it gets back to around the normal 700rpm (which usually takes less than 30 seconds) than drive off slowly.
