Very nice, but impossible to find ammo for - besides accuracy is limited at best. We don't want to hurt innocents, just the little prick trying to steal the car. With the Desert Eagle you don't even need ammo, one look down the barrel and the guy needs to change pants and will NEVER mess with your car again. (I have a DE .44, and that thing scares me to clean it = that barrel is HUGE!!!)

Yah, it depends on the state. I know in the state of Louisiana, you can pop a cap if someone tries to steal your car.

Aren't you more concerned that this person will gain access to your home again?

Perps will often repeat the crime once they know there is accessibility and stuff of value that is easily disposed of. Low-level, opportunistic thieves can't dispose of cars but laptops, etc can be sold on the street in a New York Minute.

LOCK YOUR DOORS!

BTW, I suspect your mechanical "key" is long gone, on Ebay, or hanging like a badge of honor on someone's gold chain around his/her neck!

The BMW dealership says $1100 for parts and $1100 for 4 hours of labor?!?! to replace the locks and reprogram the computer.
Any ideas on other options?
I'm sorry, $275 an hour for labor? Are the workers also mid-level associates at a NY law firm?

Before you put that chain on your doors I think you need to call another dealer and see if you do any better.

It is a general underlying principle of law that one cannot endanger life in order to protect property. This is handed down from Old English Law and the days when people used spring guns and traps to protect their home. You can protect yourself in your own home in most States but only if you feel you are in danger of physical harm.

It would be a bad idea for you to stake out your own car and confront the thief. After all, you don't know what else he is capable of doing. Further, it is a given that if you harm him, in order to protect your vehicle that you will be the one guilty of a crime and probably do more jail time than he would. Crimes against the person carry much longer sentences than crimes against property.
"........Yes officer, I came around the corner just in time to see this low life mother fuc....erm gentleman breaking into my car and yelled, got you now bitch...hey there, leave my car alone!. He charged at me with a (vaguely familiar) laptop, which he swung at my head several times. Fearing for my life, I pulled my firearm and squeezed off a few in his dome fired until he stopped coming at me."

Would that work?

I've changed the locks in the house. I used to leave the front door open to air the house in the summer... so I don't think that they have a key. My guess is that the soor was open and they walked in and stole the key from inside (which would be ballzy) and then came back at night a few days later... or maybe my son (1.5 years) got a hold of it and dropped it in the yard? Either way, the odds are small in either case. I changed the locks in the house to take precaution and also moved where I keep the keys away from the front door.

On top of that I have 2 dogs and a Glock .40 waiting for him if he wants to try again. Little did that do the first time though... I am just going to get the car re-key'd and leave it at that. It's about the only thing I can do aside from blocking in the car everynight with my wife's car. This isn't a good solution though as the guy can simply open the trunk/ car and take what is inside (not that I am going to leave anything in there again).
