I would think the flaps would be referring to the flaps that are in front of the radiator for some of the colder climates.

The flaps are not for the colder climates.
I talked to one of the guys who worked in the development team of this engine. He told me it is to get the air flow down to the oil sump. So the air gets directed to the bottom of the engine what helps cooling the engine more efficient. When I asked him why the US spec E60's doesn't have it, his response was that you are not driving as fast in the USA like you do in germany and other European countrys. So they simply save this money... It seems to help when driving real fast for a longer time.

My very early '04 was not fitted at all with the key/seat memory module. I brought it to 3 different dealers before they figured out why it wasn't working for us (We were also in for other major complaints, so don't think we were harassing dealers with this minor issue). We kept complaining that the seats did not move with our key. There was never any reference to seats on our Idrive. The dealer that finally figured it out had a heck of a time getting it to work. During the software update, it kept crashing the system in the key memory portion.
Soooo.... if you have an early build car, your car may not be equipped to handle the seat memory movement.

My car has been back to the dealer twice to get the seat memory linked to the keys. Didn't work the first time, second time they told me my car was not equipped with this feature. I also do not have the relevant sub-menu in iDrive.

vsvo- Sounds like you are going through exactly what we did. It CAN be done. Our seats now move when we unlock the doors. It is WONDERFUL, and was supposed to be fitted as STANDARD on the 530. It can be retrofit, as it was with ours. Tell them to call some higher-ups, because it really can be done. Good luck. We did not have the submenus before, and now we do (along with some other new submenus we never had before).

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the manual implies that this is a standard feature. I would really like this feature since we have two drivers and we have this feature in our Chevy Tahoe. Maybe the dealer is the problem. They still can't get rid of the shimmy in the wheel, even after replacing all 4 tires, and are now resisting my attempt to get an appointment with the factory service rep.
