Car cranks, but would not start...
Hey guys,
While I am doing a search for the solution, I hope someone can chime in and help me out, please...
It's a 2006 BMW 530i (N52).
Problem indicators:
1. Car cranks, but would not start.
2. Dashboard still says gas empty after AAA filled up the gas tank.
3. Why is the gas gauge not moving (it's stuck at 0)?
Attempted Remedies:
1. AAA came by this morning and filled up my gas tank with a gallon of gas. He says it's super unleaded.
2. No code comes up from the code reader.
3. Battery is between 12.40 to 12.80 volts.
4. Prior to AAA, I put on a new BMW genuine fuel pump. Passenger sides has gas in the tank. Driver side was completely empty while I did the installation this morning.
Last night when I came home from work, the gas indicator says I have 45 miles left until empty (prior to me changing the fuel pump). I shut off the car for about 4 minutes, came back to start the car and all it did was cranking. I disconnected the negative cable, restarted it and the engine ran. Last night was the last time the engine ran after I started the car.
Thank you in advance for any assistance!
Daniel

Discovery:
I paid $262.77 for a Genuine BMW Fuel pump that does not include a "fuel gauge sending unit". You can pay an extra $89.47 for a new one to put on. Alternatively, I fixed the fuel gauge issue by swapping the one from my old fuel pump onto the new one. The fuel gauge is now working.
My car cranks, but still won't start. Could it be the camshaft sensor? Can anyone show me how to test it, please?
If I turn the ignition to the ACC position, am I supposed hear the fuel pump running?

Crankshaft sensor (part #13-62-7-525-015)-If the ECM does not receive an impulse from the crankshaft sensor during cranking, the engine does not start. Can anyone tell me if it can be removed from underneath the car? Or do I have to remove the intake manifold to replace it? :-(
Camshaft sensor (part 13-62-7-525-014)- If a fault with the camshaft sensor is detected, the fault malfunction indicator light (MIL) is illuminated. What are the chance of this part, causing a no start?
Anyone? lol

After contemplating on replacing the crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor and selling the car, I decided to give my original BMW OEM fuel pump a 3rd chance. I put it (has 100,000 miles) back on the the car this morning and it is running like a champ again! The 2nd fuel pump (Bosch) failed in less than 2 year and this new fuel pump that I put on yesterday does not even work!
The moral of the story is don't change your fuel pump unless it is broken!
In any case, I hope this thread will help someone who might run into this same scenario!
By the way, I love this forum and really enjoy talking and participating by myself in the last couple days.
I am off for a Happy Massage and have a great day! lol

I am all about preventative maintenance also. In fact, the only parts on my car that have not been replaced are the struts, lower control arm bushings and transmission mounts. I replaced the upper hose, lower hose with new sensor, return hose, vent hose and two gallons of mixed BMW coolant yesterday when they arrived with the fuel pump replacement. lol
The shop sent me a new pump last Friday; and I am contemplating on whether I should put it on this morning before I drive it to work ( perfect time to do it when there's only 45 miles left in the gas tank!). With the recent experience, I can literally replace the fuel pump and filter with my eyes close now. In essence, it is a pain in the ass when new parts don't work; and the experience becomes too time consuming...
