You can buy trickle chargers that plug into your cigarrete lighter from the mains supply in your garage. I know Porsche does one as an accessory and calls it the charge-o-mat which will fit any make of car which is expressly designed for this purpose. I don't know if BMW do onein their range but you could buy the Porsche one or get something similar from an auto accessory shop.

My friends porsche 993 Carrera 4S burned to the ground with that type of charger.. Porsche covered nothing because he coudn't prove it was the charger that caused the fire..

Must have been a faulty unit and this can happen with any type of electrical accessory. There are guys on various Porsche sites who say they are good but I have never used one myself.

Just disconnect the battery. I have done it a few times with no problems at all.

Streak,

Have you done this on your E60? I thought the i-drive needs resetting if the battery is disconnected. I'm sure my service advisor at the dealer told me this at some point.

Active steering needs to be reinitialized if your disconnect power to it.

Rudy, that pdf probably does not take into account the situation with AS. Geez, I would probably just inflate up the tires, and put a cover on the car. Cross fingers that it will start in 90 days. Or disconnect the battery and be forced to make a trip to the dealer to activate the AS.

BMW had a solar-panel which you could use on the cigarette ighter. But it is NOT available for the E60, because it will cause severe problems!
So, NEVER plug anything in the cigarette lighter to charge the battery!!
