Were you in Sport mode?

Yes, I had it in sport mode and had manually downshifted all the way to 2nd.
If I remeber correctly, I had ~ 1500 rpm. With my old 525i, 2nd gear would have been perfect to make the turn.

I am still learning...

I have to agree. Rudy has this famous post that he keeps refering to about the obsolescence of the manual transmission. Well that is exactly why I will get a 6spd as long as I can. My guess is that within 10 years BMW will no longer offer it and then I will go SMG. May as well enjoy it while its still around.

Did you get touch-tone service on your phone yet or do you still have a dial?

All kidding aside, drive what you enjoy! I still enjoy driving my 5-speed M3 but I can honestly say I won't be buying any new cars that have traditional manuals.

The key is to have fun!

Dr. Jochen:

If your attempted downshift from 3 to 2 was a little late, SMG may have been attempting to do the downshift at the same time you were. If SMG executed the 3 -2 shift just before you tried, you can end up with a 3 - 2 - 1 shift. Can happen with the Step as well.

My watches are still mechanical Its not all about function. Sometimes art plays a role too. Anyway, like I said, I am sure I will join you soon.

I'll be taking it in soon for the CA emissions recall. I'll ask about the version then.

When I test drove the 645i with SMG, I noticed that the downshifts occurred at around 800-900rpm's. This was in non-sport mode. I didn't noticed if it differed in sport mode.
