I guess I am out of luck even with the recent upgrade to progman version 27.02. SOP on mine is 10/04.

I've been trying to do this for the past 3 days now and after 4 burnt CD's a couple of changes, it finally works. Something to note is that it is not necessary to have navigation to play the mP3 cd, but the cd cannot be put into the cd changer casette in the glove box. It has to be played in the player below your AC/Heating controls, in dash, but not in your navigation dvd slot. So to summarize a long process short, put all your favorite songs into a folder on your desktop and then just drag and drop all of them at once (Ctrl+A+Drag & Drop) into your Windows Media Player Burn List and your ready to go. Just hit the start burn button and it should prepare your CD in the right format with the right settings and it plays perfectly through the idrive with folder names, artist names etc.
I can play MP3 CD's and MP3 DVD's in my NAV slot (yes - that means 4.7GB of MP3 files playing off the DVD).

This may be a dumb question, but how do you control the disc when it is in the DVD drive (search, sort, scan, stop, pause, etc.)?

Thanks..

Same way you would any CD in the slot or changer. It's been a while since I've looked at things but I think on the CD screen, you'll see DVD at the top...

So your car without navigation plays mp3's from the CD slot? Why do you mention the DVD slot if one is not available in a car without Nav.

My 01/04 build date 545i will not play mp3's. I have asked the dealer on several occasions to enable mp3 playback and they said that this option is not available. They tried to do so on two occasions with NO luck.

Interesting. On a related topic, how does one gain access to the rest of the BMW service bulletins?
From the PDF file, it states

""" PROCEDURE
1. On a customer complaint basis only, retrofit MP3 functionality using Progman V20.00 or higher....... """

Does it means, dealer will retrofit the MP3 function for us if we complaint? Anyone get it by doing this?

my car is a 05/2005 build and i asked my dealer why it did not play mp3...so they updated the progman to 27.0 and now it works fine.

i think mp3 was enabled starting with the my05 in march 2005
