Right after reading this i tried it last night at 1am in the middle of Stratford upon avon.
A mate walked away with the keys to a loan car i currently have, whilst i stood next to it in the pouring rain (oh the things we do for science). He kept walking away and way out of sight. I phoned him. He tried the key and it wouldnt open or lock..... we figured it was far away enough...
He put the key to the phone i pointed my phone at the car...
(drum roll)
Nothing.
So i put my phone on loudspeaker and we retried
nothing.
so to summise....
Its all bs.

In the middle of the night and while in the pouring rain. Sorry it didnt work out for you. I just knew you would say it worked...I guess I still believe in Santa as well. Although I'm still not convinced that it doesnt work. I know, I know...I'm sad.

The key to your head trick works because you become a ground plane for the antenna. At least this would work on older keys that have the fob and metal shaft as the antenna. You can use any part of your body such as your hand just place the key to the body part at a 90 degree angle to extend the range.

Ok, I'm picturing the scene ......
1am in Stratford.......
Man trying to point plipper into phone.......
Other man trying to point mobile at car (or possible at head!)........
Police officer approaches and conversation begins something like "evenin'all, well what do we have 'ere then" and promptly calls anti-terrorist squad Explanation followed by "tell me again down at the station" followed by a cold night in a cell. Result - parking ticket for leaving car over allotted time

I can't try it, because I don't have an E60, but I do know for a fact that this works: If you urinate on your cell phone during the call, then the person on the other end will get a wet ear. I swear it's true. Just give it a try.

My Ride: 530i Touring, M Sport, build date 10/05, Silver Grey, Black leather, Maple Anthracite, Anthracite roof lining, panorama roof, M Aerodynamic, M Steering wheel, M Sport suspension, sport seats, shadow line, 135 M wheels, Goodyear NCT 5 runflats, and some other stuff too.
Tried this while on holidays with a rented Holden sedan. (4dr sedan version of Monaro/Pontiac GTO) me in supermarket, wife at car 50 metres away in the rain. It worked!!! Maybe I was too close and plipper just worked anyway, but I did try several times before doing the mobile phone thing and the doors didn't open.
