inknu2: if you are not touching the shifter or the steering paddles and the transmission is switching form M to S mode independently and sporadically that does not sound normal, perhaps it's back to the dealer for you....

I had the 545i already, then I was searching for E46 M3's...talked to my Dad and he said it would be more cost effective to get the E92 ///M3 so yea I was pretty excited a truly amazing car, definitely very lucky!

ok, so this is what i found out......

you can have the car in "D" auto, and drive normally in automatic,, then if you want to use the paddle shifters, its goes to sports mode shifting and if you dont shift or accelerate for a while it goes back automatically to auto If the car is in "D"..on the right side..
if the control is moved to the left, then you can shift it manually and it say m1-m6 on the controls, this is only maual and not sport.... BUT if you have it on the left and dont use the manual shift up and down control it just says "s" and it will shift itself in sport mode...

The the SPORT buttn is a whole different story......confused yet???? ME TOO!

it IS confusing, but seems to work just fine. I remember a post somewhere that discusses the difference between the S mode you get by pushing the shifter to the left versus pushing the SPORT button, but I can't remember.

And the search function on this site SUCKS - so don't feel bad if you looked and didn't find what you needed at first.

good luck and happy driving

That is the correct behavior. I've never bothered to determine all the differences between Sport mode in D and the S sport mode of the transmission.
