Hello fellow Bimmerists!
One issue has bothered me a long time. Bothered me while we still had our E39. How does each position of the rain sensor sensitivity lever lever affect the rain sensor's operation?

Just stupid f*cking manual does not clearly explain it.

I can't seem to notice much of a difference myself. That rain sensor seems to act whacky at times.

I think when you turn the knob up towards the roof of the car the sensitivity increases. I could be wrong...

The regulation will take effect in how sensitive the system is when the windshield is hitten by the rain.
If you set it to MAX sensitivity any small rain drop wil take effect and the the whipper blades will work. If you put it on the MIN position there will be rain in the windshiled for a while before it works.
At the beggining it was a little strange to set it but now it's ok.

One question people have is... what's minimum and maximum on the settings? The little diagram on there makes no sense. They need to have something like this:
