I have an 06 550 I bought 2 months ago, and have now driven 2k miles on it (bought it with 9k) I've updated the software to v26 from the dealer but I still cannot for the life of me stop smoothly. At every stop no matter how I try to feather the brake it stops abruptly with a sharp jolt at the end.

And when I let go of the brake after the stop it does lunge forward a bit (maybe it's the 360hp?)

I've looked at all the posts in the forums but cant' really see anyone else complaining about this. I'd say it's the only complaint of the car, the inability to stop and start smoothly. In stop and go traffic, it's really really annoying. Passengers think I'm a bad driver, and I end up sometimes shift to neutral to stop smoothly.
What is your idle rpm? If too high, it can cause your stop and take off problem.

The brakes on the 550i are superb and stock extremely well for me. absolutely no issues. Have yours checked out. Maybe you have a bad rotor(s).

I don't think it's bad rotors since as I"ve said, stopping with the car in neutral I can get a nice smooth stop. I'm thinking it's the "comfort stop"

I had the same issue with my 550 (as did others). I don't know if it is getting used to it, changing the way I apply the brakes or what, but I have no issues now (except for a harsh 2-3 shift under light throttle).

I was considering the same thing. Is it possible the brakes may have been soaked in deep water at one point? Maybe the rotors need turned.

My 05 545i has done this same thing from day one. Almost impossible to start or stop smoothly. Once in a while though it will briefly run smoothly, but for the life of me I can't figure why.

You guys are not alone. I had a 650i, am currently driving an M5 and 550i and they all behave that way.

I think you will find that the torque of the engine is responsible for it. I have a little of the same in my 540 and it feels as though the engine is still loading up the drive train in a high gear until it hits neutral, ie AFTER you stop. I'm betting the torque converter is responsible for it.... but which part of the cars brains controls that is anybodies guess.

My solution has been to lower my speed earlier so that the trans is in a lower gear at stop.

Cheers
