BMW promotes Castrol but my dealer used Mobil 1 on my oil change. I don't think it makes any difference as long as you use a synthetic and the weight is correct.

we are lucky.
e60 do like to drink oil but the M5 is even worse

All I had at that moment was Mobil 1. I ended up going to the dealership and they added oil for me. Thanks everyone for the help.

Even with careful break-in, some cars just burn a little more oil than others. A lot of this might be down to manufacturing variances. Some engines 'bed down' perfectly as the metal parts wear into place but not all do. A careful break-in increases the chances that your engine will never burn a drop of oil but it is not a guarantee either.
Had my E60 520D for 13 months. 16000kms (not much I agree...); never added any oil but it's true I was very easy on the engine during break-in...
