Had the dinan stage 1 installed recently which, among many things, removes the speed governor. I enjoyed an adrenaline rush whilst pinning the speedometer at 260km/hr (161.5 mph) and all I can say is WOW...what a car! I felt very confidant driving this speed in this car...it was smooth and felt connected to the road.
It's designed to do that speed for hours at a time It wouldn't be a BMW if you weren't feeling confident and connected. As for 260, it'll reach that with the speed governor on. Check the vid in my sig.

Wow, there are still people who think speeding on a public road is "great". Pity despite good case examples and sad stories, some still never listen. One only needs to ask the police or ambulance people about some cases they have to attend due to people speeding on public roads.

There can be no real "perfect" condition to speed on the road. It should be done on a private race track in my opinion. Even then, speed can be a killer. I am sure we are all too aware of a member in M5board who tried his dad's M5 on a airfield and never lived to post pictures of his car the next day as promised.

Yes he buried the needle and then his parents had to bury him along with his 4 friends.

Good luck guys... you are going to need it if you think speeding on public road is ok.

cheers

If you want to know how fast you were really going, you have to check your speed in the hidden OBD menu

Ask those same police/ambulance people (or look at some of the tests Fifth Gear made) about horrific crashes at 70mph too. Don't confuse driving at some arbitrary legal speed limit that some committee came up with as being safe and anything above it is unsafe. There are no more deaths on German motorways per capita than there are in Britain. Driving long distances at a constant 70mph is hypnotic and much more dangerous imho than driving over 100mph which requires more concentration and feeds more adrenaline into your body. Every year I make the trip back to England which involves driving from down here near Munich up to Amsterdam. Two thirds of the trip is in Germany and one third in Holland. Staying awake in the Holland part can be tough, but the German part never.

Speed isn't dangerous. Driving dangerously is dangerous. Presumably you think anything over 70mph is dangerous. That's because you've grown up with that speed limit (as I did). If we'd grown up with a limit of 100mph we'd think anything over that is dangerous. You can die in a head-on crash going 40mph. I'm bored of this now. I'm gonna click the add reply button and get off to bed

I appreciate what you're saying and words of caution duly noted.

In Canada, there are many stretches of high quality well maintained public roadways where, at the right time day or night, you are the only person driving on it. This was the case on the day I enjoyed my experience. I was in the mountians with no civilization within 90 minutes either side of where I was driving...save for parhaps the forest creatures. Two lanes all to me, the surrounding trees, and the sky above. It was remarkable.

Here are some pics of the along the Coquihalla Hwy.
Nice pictures. It'd be fun to drive in the mountains like this.

I speak from experience. Take the advice or leave it. Its up to you. I stand by what I say... like you I used to say the same things. perfect road, great driver, can handle speed,... etc. All it takes is one PUBLIC member on the road you share to do something different and you will live with the regrets. I hope not but if you are so sure it will never happen... so be it.

I always say, if the car manufacturer fitted a knife in the middle of the steering wheel, will people speed?

Call me what you like but if just one person who happens to stumble on what I wrote and decided it makes sense to take speeding to a designated place (track)... I would be more than happy.

cheers

Had the dinan stage 1 installed recently which, among many things, removes the speed governor. While travelling home from a business trip to the inetrior of BC I took the Coquihalla Hwy, which is a beautiful stretch of road that runs through the BC Rocky Mtn range and has lovely twists and turns, as well as a couple straightaways.

Anyway, it was a perfect day...clear visibility, dry roads, 33 C (91 F) and I enjoyed an adrenaline rush whilst pinning the speedometer at 260km/hr (161.5 mph) and all I can say is WOW...what a car! I felt very confidant driving this speed in this car...it was smooth and felt connected to the road.

Quite a difference from my former Audi A6 4.2.
Nice roads! I took the boys up to Kelowna for a hockey tournament a few months ago. I was crusining nicely up the coke...took my sunglasses off to see the heads up display....180km/h...oops felt like I was driving at 100km/h. I decided to put the cruise control on because this car is just tooooo smooooth on the highway!
