Bringing your car in for routine checkups
Car has gone a year without seeing the dealership, about 7800 miles with no oil change and thetech still didn't laugh at me when I brought it in. Still, I told him do a routine checkup (the oil sign came on for the first time when he started the car back up) but one thing I was wondering was software upgrades, do theyupgrade the software without asking, or do you tell them because you need to pay for it??

Unless you have an issue demanding it they will not usually. Its a lot of labor BMW does not typically pay for so dealers will not do it.
You will definatly know if they do

Well, I know there was a "passenger restraint" error that was under recall so they should have fixed that, but is there a way I can check software version through iDrive or something? I never really found out if my car had the software that caused the infamous "lag issue" when I first got it, or they're going to go ahead and install that one now.

There is a secret menu that will give version data but that is not it I hear. Since you car is in the shop now just have them check. Only dealers can tell you what it is.
