I'm trying to be prudent regarding the breakin of my new car. But when you give it gas it revs so freely that within about a nanosecond you are at 5000 rpms. With my M3 I had to go through the breakin period twice due to a service bulletin where they reaplaced connecting rod bearings. With the M3 it seemed much easier to keep to below 5500 rpms.

God I love this big V8. Very silky smooth and quite, at least in comparison to the raspy M3. Can't wait to get it fully broken in.

Smooth is right! Even with the runflats, 80 mph feels like 40 mph.

I hear you - I wasn't easy. I slipped up a few times with revs crossing over 5,500, but I sort of think that's a good way to make sure the engine brakes in as a fast one.

So, stay calm and enjoy the engine noises under 4,500 - and they only get sweeter when unleashed.

I drove to NY about 7 times in 10 days (220miles round trip) to see my friend, so that I could rack up the miles, now that its broken in, its AMAZING!!! Just turn off DST and gun it.

I'm 20 miles away from the 1200 mile mark, then I'm off to the dealership for it's first oil change tomorrow. After changing the oil in all my Hondas and Acuras over the years at the end of break-in (600 miles), they continue to impress me by running just like new, even at over 256,000 miles. Yeah, I know... the car is not due till 15K. I've read all the posts. But there's no way I'm going to let my first $70K BMW go that far to have black oil drain out in a year. I'm planning the next change at 5K then 10K, then finally have BMW pay for the 15K service. So far, I've given her half throttle starts just to give the engine some flexibility, but never full throttle starts. Can't wait to flex the engine past 4500 after tomorrow's oil change! Haha, it's about time!

I remember breaking mine in, I went over the 4500 or 5000 rpm mark a few times....oops, but I wish I was breaking a new 550i in like you guys, the 545i is impressive, but an extra 35 horses and 30 ftlbs of torque would be nice.

Just got through with the oil change this morning. Took her down an onramp to the freeway on the way home and revved her to 5800 rpm in the first 4 gears with 7/8 throttle (I don't plan on redlining the car just yet) and all I can say is...

Just got back from a little drive. By accident I hit 5000 rpm again. It happens so quickly! I'm starting to get the feel of this car after about a week. It handles very nice. Not a laser, but a great combination of performance and luxury. I couldn't be happier. Wait, yes I could. I could have the break-in period over and give it the gas and get that "Good Lord Almightly!!" feeling Roleez references.
