Thumbs up

Is anyone of the opinion that using the gears on a Steptronic E60 to brake (slow down) the car will cause any premature wear on the gearbox etc?

I have heard people saying that on manual cars it will cause premature clutch wear!!

I tend to do this a lot in town driving to reduce the brake dust on my rims

Its actually recommended in the manual. Although I don't like to do it so much, but I do.

Sometimes I do as well. I don't see any problem.

Hi Ruf930
I only found a reference to gearing down when going down steep inclines.

Was there another reference as well?

Actually, now that I think about, that is right. I was ready it when I was learn the STEP. But, it should still work on level ground... Best to ask a mechanic. Sorry about that, its been a while since I read that.

Brake is cheaper than transmission. Engine brake only when necessary.

As it was told to me by an experienced mechanic, and someone else echoed, brakes are much cheaper than a clutch, with Steptronic, I don't think the extra wear is as dramatic as with a 6 Speed or SMG. But, the higher revs on the car will take their toll, eventually...

Brake Dust is the price we pay for BMW's excellent BIG Brakes!!!

I would do engine braking esp. ona steep downhill...because engine helps to slow the car down. Correct me if I am wrong.

I agree, I do it on hills, but now that I've read you guys opinion, I don't think I'll be doing it in omal traffic anymore. I do agree that brakes cost less than a transmission. I have to discipline myself to use them!
