When my car sits for a while (hours) and I start it up, the brake pedal is very hard. If I have it on an incline, I can almost not prevent it from rolling away, I have to press the break pedal really hard.
As soon as the engine runs, the pedal of course feels normal with the hydraulic assist.
I am not 100% sure, but I didn't think it was like this when I got the car.
My wife's car and our neighbors 525i are not like this.
Is my car loosing pressure? Any data points are appreciated!
Jochen

I had something similar happen to me. It was far more frequent in hot weather than cold. I took it in to the dealer and they replaced one of the valves in the brake system. They said it was a known problem. Took them something like 30 minutes to do.

I don't think that's a normal issue.? Something is causing a pressure loss, I imagine...

For sure it has something to do with master cylinder. It happened long time back when I had a Honda Accord. When whether is hot, the brake pedal goes as deep as the floor, and I had to pump to make it works.

I don't know the cause, but if the engine is running, the brakes should be 100%. That sounds very odd. Don't want to take chances with brakes.

Would this have to do with my SMG problems? Is the hydraulic assist for the brakes connected to the SMG?

I don't think there's any connection of the hydraulic systems between the SMG and the brakes.
EBMCS03 is correct that there is a link between the SMG and the brake light switch but that's only to help the SMG know when the pedal is pressed to allow shifting from D to N to R, etc.

i also have something like this....
i must push brake pedal really hard to start the car...and when car start everything is ok...
but i must say that my brakes must be replaced in:
front 18000kms
rear 8000kms
maybe this problem will be fixed when i replaced the brakes?anyone?
but my car is 530d AUTO

It happens to me as well, the brake feel really hard when the engine has been switched off the a few hours. I thought that was normal, I'm bring mine in on Friday, that's another thing added on to the list.
