Has anybody else gotten the Brake Fluid Service Indicator light on the dash? I can also get a service message in idrive. My questions is - is this just a low level indicator - like the windshield wiper reserve - or is this a take to the dealer for a service? What kind of service would the brake fluid be? I have approximately 20,000 mile. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My hunch is that it is time to have your brake fluid flushed and changed. BMW recommends that it be done every two years (used to be every year). Since brake fluid absorbs moisture, which reduces the effectiveness of the brakes, it is good to have the brake fluid flushed and changed every two years. In fact, a requirement of the BMW CCA driving schools is that the fluid be flushed and changed within 6 months (some chapters require 1 month) of the school.
Having said all that, the brake fluid flush and change is part of the 4 year maintenance that BMW includes with USA cars.

I have not gotten the message, but it should not be a simple "top off" like oil or washer fluid. Brake fluid resides in a closed system. It does not get burned or used up. If you are low on brake fluid, it most likely indicates a leak, which could be serious. That being said, it just could bea sensor issue and no real problem at all.
Some manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid at intervals , that could be the message.

Thanks Guys, you are correct - my car just hit 2 years from the production date. It is a brake fluid flush and replace. Made an appointment for Friday, quick service. IMHO robg's avatar ROCKS!
